We are here to treat your patients close to home. And, if needed, we have the capabilities to handle trauma, to stabilize patients, and send them to one of our tertiary facilities for more advanced care.
The new Novant Health Ballantyne Medical Center is open and receiving patients to meet the expanding needs of the Ballantyne community. Ben Brodersen, hospital president and chief operating officer, shares more below about how the hospital was created to service the needs of its community today, and well into the future.
What does the hospital offer?
This new facility is equipped with inpatient and outpatient services, including:
- A helipad and an emergency room with psychiatric safe rooms and trauma rooms
- Imaging services including CT, MRI, X-ray, stress echo, nuclear medicine and ultrasound
- Surgical and procedural rooms including ORs and an endoscopy room, as well as pre-op and recovery rooms
- Maternity services including a C-section room, labor/delivery/recovery/postpartum rooms and a hydrotherapy room
36 private inpatient rooms
The medical office building, accessible from the first and second floors of the hospital, offers a variety of outpatient clinics, including:
- Novant Health Cancer Institute hematology/oncology
- Novant Health women’s imaging
- Novant Health Orthopedics & Sports Medicine Institute
“This is a front door for the Ballantyne community to access the entire Novant Health system,” Brodersen said. “We are here to treat your patients close to home. And, if needed, we have the capabilities to handle trauma, to stabilize patients, and quickly and safely get them to one of our nearby facilities where they can receive advanced care.”
Innovative options improve care and communication
Innovative thinking was critical when building Novant Health Ballantyne Medical Center. Our designers and care teams looked for the latest technology to enhance patient care.
Quarantine capabilities, so no patient is turned away
Brodersen: “We learned lessons from the pandemic, so this medical center has two entrances in the emergency room. Patients can come from the outside to a contained room, if they need to be isolated or decontaminated.”
A modern communication board system
For the first time in the Charlotte area, Novant Health has installed a digital communication board system in each patient room. The boards are updated in real time with the patient’s vital details and care plan progress.
Brodersen: “Each patient room TV is integrated into the communication system. There are different sections on the communication board including clinical data, diet information, patient precautions and care team contact information.” The TVs also stream relevant education videos. This is designed to be more interactive to promote learning and clarity, and to ensure the patient is comfortable with his or her care team and care plan.
“This also improves the accuracy of care, in conjunction with iPads mounted outside patient rooms. With information coming in from the patient’s health records, every member of the care team sees contact information, precautions and updates in real time.”
An integrated disinfection system
Brodersen: “Disinfection capabilities are integrated into the ceilings of our rooms. We have a set of standard overhead lights, then a separate ring of lights around the room that are UV. When the room is idle, it automatically utilizes UV light to kill microorganisms.”
Maternity care with modern conveniences and security
Brodersen: “The rooms feel like hotel suites, with room for a mother, a baby and a significant other. The design is meant to improve patient satisfaction, since they conveniently stay there for labor, birth and recovery. There’s access to a hydrotherapy tub, as well. And with the Hugs security system, every baby is born into a secure environment. Access points to the unit are limited, and if a baby leaves the area with an ankle tag on, the wireless system tracks the bracelet within 3 feet.”
Expansion capabilities to accommodate emergency situations and future growth
Brodersen: “Each inpatient room is private. However, we have two headwalls, so if there is an unforeseen event like a mass casualty, we can double our capacity.
“As for future growth, we have intermediate care rooms built to ICU standards, so the medical center can eventually offer an ICU. We also have our medical office building built to hospital standards, as well as an elevator built to an additional floor, so we are primed to expand the hospital with as little interruption as possible.”
Walking trails and space for our community
Brodersen: “We want to be more than a campus that people come to for just acute care needs. We want to be part of our local community and host events that focus on health and wellness, such as farmers markets and yoga classes.”
