Back, Neck & Spine Muscle Spasms
What are muscle spasms?
Muscle spasms are sudden, involuntary contractions of the muscles that support the spine. When they happen in the back or neck, it’s often a sign of irritation, strain or an underlying spine-related condition rather than a simple muscle cramp.
Back, neck and spine muscle spasms commonly happen when the muscles surrounding the spine react to inflammation, structural changes or nerve irritation. They may feel like a sudden tightening, cramping or “locking up” sensation that can limit movement and cause significant discomfort.
Unlike muscle cramps in other parts of the body that may be caused by dehydration or fatigue, spine-related muscle spasms are frequently connected to conditions affecting the vertebrae, discs or spinal nerves.
How spine conditions can cause muscle spasms
The muscles along your spine help to stabilize your spine, supporting posture and protecting the spinal column. When the spine is affected by injury, degeneration or misalignment, these muscles attempt to stabilize the area by tightening.
This protective response can cause muscles to tighten repeatedly, leading to spasms, stiffness and pain. Over time, ongoing muscle tension may make it harder to move comfortably and can create a cycle of discomfort.
Muscles spasms in the back and neck are often linked to spine conditions including herniated discs, degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis or scoliosis. In these situations, the spasms are usually a sign of an underlying issue in the spine rather than an isolated issue.
