These medications, which include ibuprofen and naproxen, can also help make movement easier and reduce everyday pain so you can stay more active and comfortable. They are often used for short-term relief.

Using NSAIDs for longer periods of time or in higher doses may increase the risk of:

• Stomach irritation
• Kidney or liver problems

If over-the-counter medications do not provide enough relief, your doctor may discuss whether prescription medications may help manage moderate or ongoing pain. Spinal injections may be recommended to help reduce inflammation and relieve pain caused by conditions such as nerve compression, spinal stenosis or herniated discs. These treatments deliver anti-inflammatory medication near irritated nerves to help ease discomfort and improve mobility.

For some patients, spinal injections can provide temporary relief and support other nonsurgical treatments, including physical therapy and medication management.
