WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Novant Health recently made access to its advanced heart failure care services more convenient for patients by opening a new all-in-one comprehensive care location in Winston-Salem. The 9,000-square-foot clinic, Novant Health Heart and Vascular - Frontis Plaza, is located at 2025 Frontis Plaza Blvd., and offers diagnostic and multispecialty care for patients with advanced heart disease and pulmonary hypertension. Both conditions are commonly referred to as silent killers because their symptoms are often ignored but can have devastating effects if left untreated. The clinic will also provide outpatient support for Novant Health’s future mechanical circulatory support program set to launch next year in the Triad.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in our country,” said Dr. Hassan Alhosaini, Novant Health’s medical director for advanced heart disease and pulmonary hypertension in the greater Winston-Salem region. “This is even more concerning when you consider that 1 in 4 people will develop heart failure within their lifetime. While heart failure care is not new at Novant Health, this is the first time that we’ve combined all of our diagnostic and treatment services into one dedicated outpatient location right here in the Triad. Our goal is to partner with the patient, their primary care provider, and their general cardiologist to provide individualized care via multidisciplinary approach.”

Novant Health Heart and Vascular - Frontis Plaza is intended to serve as a complementary extension of care for referring physicians across the Triad. The clinic is staffed by a dedicated team of heart failure specialists, advanced practice providers, pharmacists, nurses and social workers. The clinic offers convenient first-floor access, and a robust diagnostic testing area that includes laboratory testing, echocardiographic studies and cardiopulmonary exercise testing. Additionally, the clinic has a dedicated infusion suite to treat patients with diuretic therapy to alleviate congestion and avert the need for heart failure hospitalization.

Investing in the future

This new clinic will also support Novant Health’s future left ventricular assist device (LVAD) program, slated to launch soon after the south tower opens next year at Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center. This is a major milestone for Novant Health Heart & Vascular Institute, as there are only eight LVAD programs in North Carolina. One of those programs is Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington.

An artificial heart pump (or LVAD) is typically recommended for patients with end-stage heart failure. These small implantable devices help the heart pump more effectively and are often considered as a less invasive alternative to a heart transplant.

“We strive to provide our patients with expert advanced cardiac care close to home,” said Alisha Sexton, director of Novant Health Heart & Vascular Institute in the greater Winston-Salem region. “Our population is aging and by 2028, one in five people will be 65 or older across North Carolina. That’s why it’s critically important that we continue to invest in the future, by making sure that our comprehensive advanced cardiac care is more accessible across the Triad.”

The Novant Health Heart & Vascular Institute is home to 50 medical doctors, 45 advanced practice providers and 16 convenient outpatient clinic locations across the Triad. Patients can self-refer by calling 336-718-6199 or make an appointment online at NovantHealth.org/HVIFrontisPlaza. Patients can also ask their primary care provider for a referral to the Novant Health Heart & Vascular Institute.
