Novant Health garners national recognition for its excellence in heart and stroke care

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Novant Health has received multiple Get with the Guidelines quality achievement awards from the American Heart Association for improving patient outcomes for cardiovascular and stroke care. The awards build on the numerous accreditations Novant Health has received from the American College of Cardiology. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 730,000 Americans suffer a heart attack each year. Research has shown that hospitals adhering to clinical measures through Get with the Guidelines see more lives saved, shorter recovery times and fewer returns to the hospital.

“We are honored that the collaborative work of our multidisciplinary cardiovascular team has been recognized by the American Heart Association, and accredited by the American College of Cardiology,” Mariane Carna, vice president of the Novant Health Heart & Vascular Institute. “Every minute matters when a person experiences a heart attack, and our dedicated care teams work together every day to provide the high-quality care that our patients, and our communities, need.”

These awards recognize facilities for their implementation of quality improvement measures that ensure stroke and cardiovascular patients receive efficient and coordinated care according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines.

“We are grateful to be recognized again as a national leader in stroke care by the American Heart Association,” Cynthia Lang, vice president of Novant Health Neurosciences Institute. “The national standard for stroke diagnosis and treatment is 60 minutes. On average, Novant Health is more than 20 minutes faster than the national standard, a testament to our commitment to care for complex stroke patients.”

Novant Health has three comprehensive stroke centers across the state that have been certified as having the medical staff and facilities needed to care for complex stroke patients. Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem and Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center in Charlotte are accredited by The Joint Commission. Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington is certified by DNV.
