6 Novant Health facilities receive U.S. News & World Report’s best hospital for maternity care designation

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Expectant parents across North Carolina can take comfort in knowing that U.S. News & World Report, the global authority in hospital rankings and consumer advice, named six Novant Health hospitals including Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center, Novant Health Huntersville Medical Center, Novant Health Matthews Medical Center, Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center, Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center and Novant Health Rowan Medical Center to its 2023 list of High Performing hospitals for Maternity Care. This is the highest award a hospital can earn for U.S. News’ Best Hospitals for Maternity Care. The annual evaluation is designed to assist parents and their doctors in making informed decisions about the best place to receive maternity care services.

“We’re very proud to be recognized as a leader in providing high-quality maternity care services,” said Pat Campbell, the administrative executive of the Novant Health Women’s & Children's Institute. “While many factors go into this evaluation process, our goal is simple: Healthy mom, healthy baby. This recognition is a testament to the fact that everyone on our maternity care team is committed to providing the best in truly comprehensive care for our youngest patients and their families.”

The high performing methodology is based entirely on objective measures of quality, such as C-section rates in lower-risk pregnancies, newborn complication rates, exclusive breast milk feeding rates, early elective delivery rates and vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC) rates, among other measures.

As part of its review, U.S. News evaluated nearly 650 hospitals that provide high-quality labor and delivery services for uncomplicated pregnancies. It found that fewer than half of all hospitals that offer maternity care and participated in the survey received a High Performing designation.

“When expectant parents are considering their options for welcoming a baby to the world, the Best Hospitals for Maternity Care are designed to help them identify hospitals that excel in delivering babies for uncomplicated pregnancies,” said Ben Harder, chief of health analysis and managing editor at U.S. News. “A hospital that has earned a High Performing designation may be a good option for parents, in consultation with their medical provider, to consider.”
