WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Earlier today, team members at Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center gathered in a crowded conference room to take part in a highly anticipated “watch party.” No, this was not a sporting event. But for nearly 2,000 nurses who work at the hospital, this announcement was something much more meaningful.
At 10:15 a.m., the American Nurses Credentialing Center Magnet Recognition Program honored Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center and Novant Health Medical Park Hospital with their fifth consecutive redesignation, catapulting the medical centers into the top 2% of five times redesignated Magnet programs across the country, and making them the longest running Magnet program in the state of North Carolina.
“We’re incredibly proud to have the longest running Magnet-recognized hospitals in the state of North Carolina,” said Loraine Frank-lightfoot, vice president of nursing and chief nursing officer for Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center and the Winston-Salem region. “Make no mistake, this is not an easy recognition to attain and maintaining it for 20 years is a feat that only 2% of hospitals nationwide have been able to achieve. This recognition is a testament to our nurses and our entire team and their longstanding commitment to provide consistent and high-quality care for our patients right here in Winston-Salem and across the Triad.”
Magnet programs are recognized for providing excellence and quality in nursing care. Published research has shown that hospitals with Magnet recognition have positive outcomes for patients, nurses and the workplace. Patients receiving care at Magnet-recognized hospitals have been recorded as experiencing lower mortality rates and greater satisfaction during their stay and are able to go home sooner.
Novant Health’s Magnet journey in Winston-Salem
Forsyth Medical Center’s division of nursing started the journey toward achieving Magnet recognition in 1999. In January 2004, Forsyth Medical Center became the 94th Magnet hospital in the United States and the first Magnet designated facility in the Novant Health system.
