Shoulder replacement surgery

Chronic shoulder pain can make everyday activities such as lifting your arm, reaching overhead or sleeping comfortably difficult and frustrating. When shoulder arthritis or joint damage no longer responds to nonsurgical treatment, shoulder replacement surgery may offer lasting pain relief and improved mobility. At Novant Health, our shoulder specialists provide advanced, patient-centered care designed to restore function.

What is shoulder replacement surgery?

Shoulder replacement surgery is a procedure in which damaged parts of the shoulder joint are removed and replaced with artificial components called prostheses. The goal is to reduce pain, improve joint movement and restore overall shoulder function.

The shoulder is a ball-and-socket joint formed by the humeral head (upper arm bone) and the glenoid (the socket in the shoulder blade). During shoulder arthroplasty, one or both of these surfaces are resurfaced depending on your condition and surgical plan. Total shoulder replacement and reverse shoulder replacement are both options your orthopedic specialist may recommend, depending on your diagnosis and the health of your rotator cuff.
