What is tendon transfer for foot and ankle?

Tendon transfer is a surgical procedure that reroutes a healthy tendon to take over the job of a tendon that's too damaged to repair. In the foot and ankle, this often involves the flexor digitorum longus (FDL) tendon, which normally helps flex the toes, being repositioned to support the arch when the posterior tibial tendon can no longer do its job.

This foot surgery is typically recommended for advanced tendon dysfunction, when the arch has started to collapse and nonsurgical treatments no longer provide relief. The goal is to restore alignment, improve walking mechanics and relieve pain so you can move more comfortably.
