Bunion Correction

Many mild to moderate bunions can be managed without surgery. At Novant Health, we emphasize conservative, non-invasive care to reduce pain, slow progression and improve comfort.

Your personalized treatment plan may include:

• Footwear modifications: shoes with a wide toe box and avoiding high heels to reduce pressure
• Padding or orthotics: custom or over-the-counter inserts to improve alignment and cushioning
• Medication: nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen, to help reduce pain and inflammation
• Cold therapy: ice applied for 15–20 minutes several times a day to minimize swelling
• Physical therapy: stretching and strengthening exercises to support joint mechanics

If non-surgical treatments no longer provide relief or your bunion interferes with daily activities, surgery may be recommended. Depending on your condition, your surgeon may recommend a minimally invasive or traditional open procedure.

Minimally invasive techniques

Use small incisions and specialized instruments to realign the bone and soft tissue. This approach often results in less postoperative discomfort, minimal scarring and faster recovery.

Open corrective surgery

May be recommended for more complex or severe bunions. This approach allows precise joint realignment, removal of bony prominence, and restoration of proper foot mechanics.

We tailor your recovery plan to support healing and restore function.

• Weeks 1–6: a surgical shoe or boot protects your foot as swelling decreases and gentle motion exercises begin
• Weeks 6–12: weight-bearing gradually increases, with physical therapy focused on flexibility and strength
• Return to activity: most patients resume normal footwear and activities within three to six months, depending on the procedure and individual needs

After recovery, your care team will guide you in using supportive footwear, orthotics and exercises to keep your feet healthy and prevent the bunion from returning.
