Joint pain and stiffness

Joint pain and stiffness are among the most common health complaints, affecting the knees, shoulders, hips and hands. These symptoms can turn everyday tasks like walking, climbing stairs or typing into a real challenge. The good news is that with the right evaluation and treatment plan, most people find meaningful relief and get back to doing what they love.

Anatomy of the joints

A joint is where two or more bones meet, allowing your body to bend, twist and move. Cartilage, a smooth, cushioning tissue, covers the ends of the bones so they can glide against each other without friction. Ligaments, tendons and a thin lining called the synovium work together to support the joint, keep it stable and reduce wear over time.

When cartilage breaks down, the synovium becomes inflamed or the surrounding tissues are strained, joints can become painful, swollen and stiff. Because joints are involved in nearly every movement you make, even minor damage or inflammation can have a noticeable impact on daily life.
