Anatomy of the hip, knee and shoulder
Each joint in your body is built to move within a specific range that balances flexibility with control. Ligaments, tendons and surrounding muscles work together to keep joints properly aligned during movement.
In the knee, ligaments such as the ACL and MCL limit excessive bending and twisting. When these structures are overly flexible, the knee can feel unstable or prone to giving out. The hip relies on its deep ball-and-socket structure along with strong ligaments and the labrum, a ring of cartilage that helps center the joint, so hypermobility here can cause looseness, catching or discomfort. The shoulder is the most mobile joint in the body and depends heavily on muscles and tendons for support, which means excess motion can lead to partial dislocations, pain or weakness with repeated use.
When supportive tissues stretch too easily or don't fully rebound, joints can move farther than intended. Over time, this added strain can increase the risk of repeated injury.
