Broken toe

A toe fracture is a break in one of the small bones of your toe, often caused by stubbing it, dropping something heavy on it or a sports injury. This common injury can cause sharp pain, swelling and bruising, making it hard to walk or wear shoes comfortably. With the right care, most toe fractures heal well and let you get back to your normal routine.

Anatomy of the toe

Your toes have two or three small bones called phalanges, connected by joints and supported by tendons and ligaments. A fracture disrupts this structure, leading to instability, swelling and pain.

The big toe, or hallux, bears more weight than the others and can be more painful when injured. It often takes longer to heal, too. Without proper care, the bone may heal out of alignment, which can lead to stiffness, discomfort or long-term joint changes.
