From diagnosis to personalized treatment.

If your primary care physician or dermatologist suspects early symptoms of skin cancer, they'll refer you to a skin specialist. From there, our team reviews your case and works with you to develop a personalized treatment plan.

Depending on your situation, your skin cancer treatment may include:

Sentinel lymph node biopsy: The removal and biopsy of lymph nodes to see if cancer is present.
Skin grafting: Healthy skin is transplanted from one area of the body to treat the affected area.
Complex closure: The closure of an open wound after skin cancer removal.
Reconstruction: Surgery is performed to replace missing skin and tissue to restore its appearance and minimize scarring.
Radiation therapy, immunotherapy and targeted agents: For advanced cases, one or more of these treatments may be used.

Types of Skin Cancer

Basal Cell Carcinoma

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is a common type of nonmelanoma skin cancer. BCC is typically caused by sun or tanning bed exposure. Symptoms of skin cancer include lesions on sun-exposed areas, such as your hands and scalp. However, the lesions can differ in appearance from person to person.

Although basal cell skin cancer grows slowly, detecting the warning signs is vital. Your primary care provider may refer you to a skin cancer dermatologist or recommend additional screening or diagnostic tests.

Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the second most common form of skin cancer. Ultraviolet (UV) rays and environmental toxins can increase your risk of SCC. The appearance of skin lesions varies among individuals, and lesions can occur anywhere on your body, including your neck, lips and hands.

Early diagnosis and treatment helps prevent SCC from spreading to other parts of your body. A skin cancer dermatologist or surgical oncologist can answer your questions and suggest the best method for your skin cancer removal

Melanoma

Malignant melanoma is less common than basal cell or squamous cell skin cancer. However, invasive types can be more aggressive. Like other cancers, sun exposure is a risk factor, but your family history may also play a role.

Your primary care provider may refer you to a melanoma cancer specialist to determine treatment options for:

Superficial spreading melanoma
Lentigo maligna melanoma
Acral lentiginous melanoma
Nodular melanoma
Mucosal melanoma
Uveal melanoma

Melanoma skin cancer symptoms include the development of a new skin growth or changes to an existing mole. This type of skin cancer can occur anywhere on your body, including under your fingernails or in your eye, so it’s best to get regular checkups with your primary care provider, dermatologist and eye physician.

Merkel Cell Carcinoma

Merkel cell skin cancer is rare and aggressive. The skin tumor grows rapidly and can spread to other parts of your body. Sun exposure, age or a weakened immune system may increase your risk.

Early detection and advanced skin cancer treatments can help you tackle this disease. As with other skin cancers, our multidisciplinary team develops a personalized treatment plan and coordinates your care. Your team may include a radiation oncologist, skin cancer specialists, plastic surgeons and a nurse navigator.
