Presbyterian Medical Center is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Information desks are located inside the main and north wing lobbies. If you need a patient’s room number, or a map to find a particular area within the hospital, our courteous staff can assist you.

Metal detection screening

Novant Health has implemented metal detection screening at our two largest and busiest emergency departments. All persons entering Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center or Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center emergency departments will now go through a walkthrough unit to help ensure public safety.

We are committed to providing the best care, welfare, safety and security to all patients and team members while they work and receive care at our emergency departments. Metal detection screening is a proven way to prevent persons from entering the facility with a dangerous weapon and is just one of many tools that our public safety team is using to help ensure a safe environment for everyone.

 What prompted this?

The unfortunate reality is that we have had instances where people have attempted to bring weapons into our facilities. While none of these events led to patient or team member harm, we have zero tolerance for the violation of our weapon-free policy. Metal detection screening is just one of many tools we have to help us enforce this policy.

 How many weapons/incidents have occurred?

While we cannot provide specific numbers, we have seen an increase in the number of weapons brought to the ED by patients and visitors. To be clear, none of these instances resulted in team member or patient harm, but we have a zero tolerance policy in place to ensure the safety of everyone in our facilities.

Do all people go through a metal detector? Patients and their visitors?

The stationary walkthrough metal detection screening equipment is located at the public entrance points of Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center and Forsyth Medical Center Emergency Departments. All individuals entering through these entry points will be required to go through the screening process. Hand-held metal detectors may also be used by public safety personnel in the event that an individual is not able to be screened by the walkthrough equipment.
