CHARLOTTE, N.C. – On June 13, Novant Health opened its first inpatient rehabilitation unit in Charlotte, designed to provide multispecialty restorative care for patients as they transition home from the hospital. Recovery and rehabilitation care encompasses a variety of medical conditions including heart failure, neurological issues such as stroke, or in some cases, orthopedic surgery. The 10-bed unit is conveniently located inside of Novant Health Charlotte Orthopedic Hospital and will allow patients to receive the comprehensive care they need, at a location that’s close to home.
“We’re very excited to welcome patients to our new inpatient rehabilitation unit,” said Jamie Feinour, president and chief operating officer at Novant Health Charlotte Orthopedic Hospital. “While we have always provided the latest in leading-edge care and advanced surgical treatment, we have historically had to transfer some of our short-term rehab patients to post-acute care facilities. This inconvenience for patients was a driving factor behind our decision to add this new transitional unit to the hospital. We want our patients to know that we’re well-equipped to provide the care and rehabilitative support they need from the moment they enter our door, until it’s time to go home.”
Located on the third floor of the hospital, the unit will provide short-term rehabilitative care. Patients will benefit from physical, occupational and speech therapy services and have access to a state-of-the-art rehabilitative gym. The gym will feature raised treatment beds and the latest in exercise and rehabilitative equipment. The unit will also include a daily living space, equipped with a kitchen, washer, dryer and other household features, allowing patients to safely refamiliarize themselves with daily living activities.
“Our goal is to help patients return to their highest quality of life,” said Jill Gehman, chief nursing officer at Novant Health Charlotte Orthopedic Hospital. “In practical terms, patients will be encouraged to wear their normal street clothes while in the unit and to maintain a ‘going home’ mindset. Our team will work closely with each patient to develop a personalized rehabilitative plan focused on restoring what we refer to as functional fitness. Whether it be regaining balance from a neurological issue, or strength from a hip replacement, our aim is to help patients get back to doing the everyday things they enjoy. We also work closely with the patient’s caregiver, to make sure everyone in the family feels well-prepared to help their loved one safely return home.”
Novant Health offers inpatient and outpatient rehabilitative services for patients of all ages. Each certified rehab therapist also specializes in pain management and is specifically trained to help patients recover from disabilities associated with cancer, heart attack, stroke, brain injuries and speech/hearing difficulties.
Founded in 1976, Novant Health Charlotte Orthopedic Hospital is a department of Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center and serves as the region’s only orthopedic hospital.
