Application Criteria

Interview process

Applicants must fulfill the following requirements to be considered for interview at the Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center surgical residency program:

1. USMLE scores (Steps 1 and 2): Pass on first attempt with the Step 2 score being 220 or higher.
2. Grades: Honors or high pass grade in surgery clerkship preferred.
3. Graduation from medical school immediately prior to application for residency.
4. United States citizenship (We do not sponsor visas or accept green cards.)

All applications must be submitted through the Electronic Residency Application Services (ERAS) to be considered for review. Applications received through alternative methods will not be reviewed. The following items must be included:

1. ERAS application
2. Personal statement
3. USMLE scores for Step 1 and Step 2
4. Official medical school transcript
5. Three letters of recommendation in a surgical specialty
6. Dean's letter 

We accept ERAS applications from September 3 to October 10, 2025. We will begin reviewing applications on September 24, 2025.

Surgeons involved in the Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center General Surgery Residency will host four Virtual Interview Days, each featuring morning and afternoon sessions for categorical and preliminary applicants, with 14 applicants interviewed per day.

November 4 through December 9, 2025.

The first round of interview offers to applicants will be notified starting October 13, 2025.

All applicants offered interviews will need to accept them through Thalamus and then you will be prompted to choose an interview date and review program details.
