Mindful eating and other smart choices support weight loss
The goal of our Behavior Health Program is to give you tools for long-term success. This means going beyond a focus on weight loss. We want to give you an effective plan for improving the quality of your life.
Our Behavioral Health Program is designed to help you recognize unhealthy eating habits and, in some cases, eating disorders. You’ll learn coping skills, how to establish a better relationship with food and to improve your ability to manage stress, anxiety and depression.
Addressing the psychological aspects of obesity is critical for long-term success at weight loss. Whether you are seeking to make changes to your lifestyle or want medical weight management or bariatric surgery, Novant Health offers behavioral health services that can help you reach your weight-loss goals for a healthier life. Ask your provider about services that are available to you.
Healthy mind, healthy body
Do you often eat in response to emotions or stress instead of true hunger? It is important to discuss this pattern of eating during your initial visit to ensure you get effective treatment. Behavioral health services can help you with mindful eating and other smart choices.
If you are considered a candidate for bariatric surgery, you will receive an evaluation to understand how your emotions and behavior have contributed to weight gain. You also will work with a dietitian to learn healthy eating habits. Our medical teams offer behavioral health assessments at locations where weight-loss services are available.
Behavioral health services can include:
- Individual counseling
- Cognitive behavioral therapy
- Monthly support groups
- Psychological testing in bariatric surgery program
- Location specific Mindful Eating and Back on Track classes
Follow up visits with the counselor can be the difference between staying on track and losing focus. You don’t have to do this alone.
