An advance directive for mental health treatment allows you to specify in advance your treatment preferences should you have a crisis and be unable to make your own mental health treatment decisions. These preferences can include guidelines for medications, electro-convulsive therapy (ECT), hospital admission and the use of restraints. However, this advance directive cannot prevent an involuntary commitment if doctors believe it is in your best interests.
