How executive compensation is established
- In adherence with national standards and regulations, Novant Health determines executive compensation through a meticulous and intentional process.
- The Novant Health Board of Trustees, which consists of community leaders from organizations and businesses, establishes executive compensation frameworks in collaboration with national independent experts to benchmark against comparable nonprofit health systems, ensuring that compensation and benefits remain equitable and do not exceed fair market value.
- Novant Health executives are not involved in determining their own compensation and benefits.
- Compensation is designed to be competitive and to help recruit and retain the best talent. Novant Health establishes executive base salaries in the same way it establishes compensation for all employees. Overall, the health system has invested hundreds of millions of dollars in our team members through benefit enhancements and compensation increases.
- A significant part of executive compensation is based upon the performance of the organization and achieving goals that are challenging, balanced and focused on improving the services we provide and elevating safety and quality for all patients.
- Under the leadership of the Novant Health executive team, the organization has continued to extend care to new communities and provide the latest in treatments and technologies, such as offering phase I clinical trials, recruiting top experts to serve more communities, expanding virtual care to increase access for rural areas and transforming recruitment to hire more nurses, faster. The health system has continued to achieve strong safety and quality performance as validated by independent organizations.
- Novant Health currently has nearly 42,000 team members, 8,600 independent and employed clinicians, annual operating revenues of $10.2 billion, 19 hospitals and more than 900 total locations. This workforce empowers Novant Health to respond to emergencies like COVID-19 and natural disasters, including Hurricane Helene in Western North Carolina.
In 2024, Novant Health provided more than $1.6 billion in community benefit, and has one of the most generous financial assistance polices in the nation, which includes support from our dedicated financial navigators to increase patient understanding and awareness reduced and no-cost care offerings. Novant Health is also a strong community partner and establishes programs and partnerships that are strategically focused on achieving health equity – improving health and upward mobility in all communities, especially those that need it most.
