What is tibial tubercle osteotomy?

Tibial tubercle osteotomy, often called TTO surgery, is a procedure that repositions the tibial tubercle, the bony bump below your kneecap where the patellar tendon attaches. Moving this attachment point changes the angle at which your kneecap tracks, which can correct patellar maltracking and reduce the risk of future dislocations.

This procedure may be recommended when kneecap instability or patellar tracking disorder hasn't improved with nonsurgical care, or when imaging shows a structural alignment problem contributing to your symptoms. Your orthopedic team will confirm whether tibial tubercle osteotomy is the right fit based on your anatomy, activity level and history of patellar instability.
