What is tendon repair surgery?

Tendons are strong, cord-like tissues that connect muscle to bone. They allow you to run, jump, lift and move your joints through their full range of motion. When a tendon tears or ruptures, whether from a sudden injury or gradual wear, you may lose strength, stability or the ability to move a joint normally.

Tendon repair surgery reconnects torn tendon ends or reattaches a tendon to bone so it can heal properly. This treatment is common for tendons in the shoulder (rotator cuff), knee (patellar or quadriceps tendon), ankle (Achilles tendon), elbow and hand or wrist. Surgery is often recommended when a tendon is completely torn or ruptured, or when nonsurgical care hasn't resolved a chronic tendon problem. Prompt, expert evaluation can make a meaningful difference in how well a tendon heals.
