Quad strain

Pain or weakness in the front of your thigh can make everyday movements like walking, climbing stairs or standing up feel difficult and frustrating. A quadriceps strain or tear is a common muscle injury that affects athletes and non-athletes alike. With an accurate diagnosis and the right treatment plan, most people recover well and return safely to the activities they enjoy.

Anatomy of the thigh

Your quadriceps muscles, often called the quads, are a group of four powerful muscles located at the front of your thigh. They work together to extend your knee and help lift your leg, making them essential for walking, running, jumping and standing up from a seated position.

These muscles connect to the kneecap through the quadriceps tendon, which plays a critical role in knee stability and movement. Because the quadriceps are so heavily involved in daily and athletic activities, they're especially vulnerable to strain. A quadriceps strain occurs when the muscle is overstretched or partially torn, while a tear is a more severe injury in which muscle fibers, or sometimes the tendon itself, are significantly or completely torn.
