Family Medicine & Primary Care

We partner with you for life-long health

At Novant Health, your primary care team is your first point of contact for non-emergency medical needs. We play a vital role in helping you stay healthy through annual physicals designed to catch and treat health issues early. We may recommend changes in diet and exercise and/or prescribe medications to keep you healthy and prevent, delay or treat chronic illness.

Your primary care provider can also treat you for the flu, aches and pains and other complaints that are not life threatening. In some instances, we may be able to see and treat you the same day via an in-person or virtual sick visit. When needed, we can refer you to a specialist for further evaluation and/or treatment.

Either way, your primary care provider can help you find, coordinate and manage any care you need.

Types of primary care providers

To help you select the care that best suits your needs, here are four types of primary care clinics and providers we offer at Novant Health.

Family medicine

Family medicine providers are trained to provide continuing and comprehensive primary care services for patients of all ages — from newborns and adolescents to adults and seniors. This may be a good choice if you want to avoid dealing with multiple clinics and care teams to take care of all the medical needs in your household or family.

Internal medicine

Internal medicine providers specialize in primary care for adults. They're often referred to as internists and are adept at diagnosing complicated medical problems as well as caring for people with chronic illness and/or multiple diseases. If you find an internist you like, you can find out if they will treat someone under age 18 by calling their clinic directly.

Pediatric medicine

Pediatricians focus on caring for children and adolescents and have a deep knowledge of the growth, development and behavior of young children and can refer you to — and coordinate care with — a broad range of pediatric specialists.

Ob-Gyn care

An ob-gyn, or obstetrician-gynecologist, is a women’s health specialist who specializes in providing healthcare to females. Ob-gyn services include reproductive health, breast health, pregnancy care and other health concerns for women and teenage girls.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommends your child have her first gynecologic appointment between the age of 13 and 15. If you find an ob-gyn you like, you can find out if they will treat someone for primary care by calling their clinic directly.

Geriatric medicine

Geriatric medicine providers treat older adults with a range of concerns that affect people age 65 and older, such as memory loss, balance concerns, mood changes, and increased frailty. They may work in their own dedicated clinics as well as family medicine and internal medicine clinics.
