At a young age, I was devastated by my grandmother's death due to ovarian cancer and my grandfather's battle with diabetes resulting in double, below-the-knee amputations. Seeing what they endured led me to want to ease people's pain and suffering and help them prevent diseases that are preventable.

But I took a detour before going into medicine; my previous career was in choral conducting.
