Curriculum
Residents in the Novant Health family medicine residency program in Wilmington don’t just learn in the hospital — they learn in the community alongside a supportive network of passionate faculty and dedicated community preceptors. You’ll gain diverse clinical experience across inpatient, outpatient, and subspecialty settings — guided by people who love to teach and are invested in your growth.
We use a 13-block rotation schedule beginning at the end of June.
First year
Hospital-heavy, foundation-building
- Orientation – 4 weeks
- Inpatient medicine: 2 weeks
- Outpatient medicine: 2 weeks
- Family Medicine Inpatient Service – 8 weeks (Four 2-week blocks; some rotations may involve occasional overnight call.)
- Emergency Medicine – 4 weeks (2-week blocks)
- Inpatient Pediatrics – 8 weeks
- Obstetrics – 8 weeks
- Intensive care unit (ICU)/critical care – 2 weeks (Some rotations may involve occasional overnight call.)
- Medical Specialties - 2 weeks
- General Surgery – 4 weeks (2-week blocks)
- Community Medicine & Health Equity I – 4 weeks
- Family medicine night float – 4 weeks (2-week blocks)
- Geriatrics – 4 weeks (2-week blocks)
Second year
Community-based, skills-focused
- Family Medicine Inpatient Service – 8 weeks (2-week blocks)
- Ambulatory Pediatrics – 4 weeks
- Inpatient Psychiatry – 4 weeks
- Health Systems Management & Health Equity II – 4 weeks
- Electives – 8 weeks (Your chance to explore!)
- Gynecology – 4 weeks
- Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) – 4 weeks
- Ambulatory Family Medicine – 8 weeks (2-week blocks)
- Family medicine Night Float – 4 weeks (2-week blocks)
- Musculoskeletal Medicine – 4 weeks (2-week blocks)
Third year
Community-based, career-shaping
- Family Medicine Inpatient Service – 8 weeks (2-week blocks)
- Behavioral Medicine – 4 weeks
- Pediatric Subspecialties – 4 weeks
- Ambulatory Family Medicine – 8 weeks (2-week blocks)
- Total Population Care & Health Equity III – 4 weeks
