We appreciate your interest in volunteering with us. Due to concerns regarding COVID-19, the volunteer program at all Novant Health facilities has been temporarily suspended. Therefore, at this time, we are unable to invite volunteers to join our team. Your safety and the safety of our patients, loved ones and team members is our priority.
Potential Adult Volunteers: We invite you to complete an application. By doing so we have your information on file and can contact you when the suspension is lifted and we once again start the onboarding process of new volunteers. We look forward to getting to know you!
Potential Junior Volunteers (ages 14-18):
The 2020 Fall Program has been cancelled. The status of the 2021 Spring Program has not yet been determined. Please revisit this website in November, 2020 for updated information about the status of our Spring Program.
Your time can make a difference
If you have ever visited Novant Health Matthews Medical Center, no doubt you have noticed our many volunteers that play an important role in the daily operations of our hospital.
Matthews Medical Center volunteers provide an invaluable community service that is appreciated by everyone they encounter. They also enjoy camaraderie with others who share the same interest in serving people in a healthcare setting. If you enjoy interacting with people and serving others, we hope you’ll consider joining this special group. Our volunteers know the rewards of helping others and making a difference in someone else's life. No experience is necessary.
As a volunteer you’ll help to present the friendly, caring face we’re known for by assisting patients and visitors in many ways, including:
• Serving at reception desks and information centers
• Giving patients and visitors directions and helping them find their way
• Transporting patients throughout the hospital
• Providing non-clinical assistance to various departments within the hospital
• Assisting in the hospital gift shop and making welcome deliveries to patient rooms

Our Junior Volunteer Program offers an opportunity for teens, ages 14 to 18 (9th – 12th grade), to serve after school and/or during the summer. Junior Volunteers must be able to follow directions, accept supervision and work independently. We are looking for mature students who can make a reliable commitment of one 2-hour after school shift per week for an entire 10-week Fall session or a 10-week Spring session or one 3-hour shift per week for a 9-week summer program. Consistent weekly attendance is very important. Our teen volunteers are trained and supervised by a Volunteer Coordinator and they perform many of the same duties as adult volunteers.
Applications for the school year Junior Volunteer Program are accepted between August 1st and August 31st. Applications for the summer program are accepted between March 1st and March 31st. No early or late applications will be accepted. To apply to be a Junior Volunteer, please submit an online Junior Volunteer Application. NOTE: Our Junior Volunteer Program is highly desirable and extremely competitive with significantly more applicants than service roles available. The number of service roles available is solely based on the needs of Novant Health Matthews Medical Center.
Upon submission of a Junior Volunteer Application specific instructions will be emailed to the applicant regarding the next steps of the process. Applicants must successfully complete all application steps by the deadlines stated in this email in order to be considered for an interview. Completion of paperwork does not guarantee an interview, and an invitation to interview does not guarantee placement. If accepted into the program, Junior Volunteers are given a specific volunteer assignment. Junior Volunteer assignments have specific duties and responsibilities and are not intended to provide the student with shadowing opportunities of medical professionals.
