Smoking cessation is particularly important for cancer survivors, whether they are currently undergoing treatment or have already finished. Quitting smoking has benefits of improved survival, treatment outcomes and quality of life. Quitting smoking decreases toxicity and surgical complications.
Novant Health Cancer Institute now provides tobacco cessation counseling for cancer patients and survivors. If you take advantage of this program, your tobacco cessation counselor will:
- Utilize evidence-based practice in tobacco cessation
- Recommend pharmacologic therapy
- Provide close follow-up with face-to-face and telephone counseling sessions
Insurance carriers typically provide coverage, but you should check insurance coverage for smoking cessation counseling and nicotine replacement therapy.
