Neonatal Intensive Care

Providing the highest level of care to premature and critically ill newborns

If your baby is born prematurely, critically ill or requiring special care, they will be cared for in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) located in Hemby Children’s Hospital. Our NICU is a Level IV nursery, the highest certification attainable in North Carolina, meaning your child will get medically advanced, round-the-clock care.

Your baby’s care team is available to help care for your newborn while providing support and resources for you and your family. This dedicated team includes board-certified neonatologists, nurses, respiratory therapists, neonatal nurse practitioners, nutritionists, early intervention coordinators, physical therapists, occupational therapists, social workers, pharmacists, discharge planning nurses, speech therapists and child life specialists.

NICU security code

Your baby’s safety and security are our top priority. To make sure only approved family and friends you designate can visit or get phone updates about your baby, you will receive a parent code and grandparent code to use when requesting information.

The child’s father must have the second band to receive a code. This code cannot be changed during your stay in the NICU, and you are responsible for sharing the code with the person you wish to have detailed information about your baby and your baby’s condition. Be prepared to provide your code each time you call or visit.

You can check on your baby any time by calling the NICU at 704-384-4944
