Magnet Award: excellence in nursing

Only 5% of hospitals across America have earned designation as Magnet Health Care facilities, which recognizes the highest level of nursing care and is considered the gold standard in nursing. Our nurse-to-patient ratios, nursing specialty certifications and support of professional nursing practices have helped us achieve this coveted award.

Hallmark Award: remarkable work environment

Hemby Children's Hospital and the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit have received the Hallmark Award, given by the North Carolina Nurses Association, for fostering a healthy and positive work environment for nurses where communication is valued and nurses can contribute to facility governance. A healthy work environment allows our nurses to deliver excellent care to our pediatric patients and positively impact their lives.

Oncology-certified nurses

Should your child need cancer treatment, you should feel reassured that many of our nursing staff hold the distinction of being certified pediatric oncology nurses (CPON) from The National Oncology Nursing Society as being specially trained in the latest cancer procedures and treatments at a higher level of specialized care.

The beginning of Hemby

Torrence and Hilda Hemby had a vision to see a hospital dedicated solely to the needs of children. In 1995, Novant Health Hemby Children’s Hospital opened at Presbyterian Medical Center in Charlotte as a specialized facility for children from birth to age 17. It now encompasses a 35-bed general pediatric unit, an 8-bed pediatric intensive care, a 38-bed Level IV neonatal care unit, a 20-bed adolescent behavioral health unit and a 24/7 children’s emergency department.
