Our History
Our story through the years.
Novant Health was formed July 1, 1997 by the merger of Carolina Medicorp of Winston-Salem, North Carolina and Presbyterian Health Services of Charlotte, North Carolina. We've continued to grow and reach out to new communities through our medical centers.
1891 - Twin City Hospital opened in Winston-Salem, NC.
1903 - Presbyterian Hospital opened in Charlotte, NC.
1930 - City Memorial Hospital of Thomasville opened in Thomasville, NC.
1936 - Rowan Memorial Hospital opened in Salisbury, NC.
1964 - Twin City Hospital renamed and opened as Forsyth Memorial Hospital.
1964 - Prince William Hospital opened in Manassas, VA.
1971 - City Memorial Hospital of Thomasville renamed to Community General Hospital of Thomasville.
1971 - Medical Park Hospital opened in Winston-Salem.
1976 - Orthopaedic Hospital of Charlotte is founded by a group of orthopedic surgeons. This is the Greater Charlotte area's only orthopedic hospital.
1977 - Brunswick Community Hospital opened in Supply, NC.
1988 - Upstate Carolina Center opened in Gaffney, SC. (sold November 1, 2014)
1994 - Presbyterian Hospital opened Presbyterian Hospital Matthews in Matthews, NC.
1995 - Presbyterian Hospital opened Presbyterian Hemby Children's Hospital in Charlotte, NC.
1995 - Rowan Memorial Hospital renamed to Rowan Regional Medical Center.
1997 - Merger between Forsyth Memorial Hospital and Presbyterian Hospital formed Novant Health.
1997 - Community General Hospital of Thomasville merged with Novant Health.
1998 - Orthopaedic Hospital of Charlotte merged with Novant Health and is renamed to Presbyterian Orthopedic Hospital.
2001 - Community General Hospital renamed to Thomasville Medical Center.
2004 - Presbyterian Hospital Huntersville opened in Huntersville, NC.
2006 - Brunswick Community Hospital merged with Novant Health and renamed to Brunswick Novant Medical Center.
2008 - Rowan Regional Medical Center merged with Novant Health.
2009 - Prince William Health System merged with Novant Health.
2011 - Brunswick Novant Medical Center relocated to Bolivia, NC.
2011 - Kernersville Medical Center opened in Kernersville, NC.
2013 - Clemmons Medical Center opened in Clemmons, NC.

2014 - Haymarket Medical Center opened in Haymarket, VA.
2017 - Phase 2 of Novant Health Clemmons Medical Center complete.
2018 - Novant Health Mint Hill Medical Center opens.
2018 - Novant Health Rehabilitation Hospital, an affiliate of Encompass Health, opens.
2021 - New Hanover Regional Medical Center merged with Novant Health.
2021 - Novant Health UVA Health System partnership ends; UVA Health acquires Novant Health's Virginia operations, including Haymarket Medical Center and Prince William Medical Center.
2022 - New Hanover Regional Medical Center facility names change to:

2023 - Novant Health Ballantyne Medical Center opens
2024 - Novant Health acquires three South Carolina hospitals and associated physician clinics and operations from Tenet Healthcare. The transaction includes East Cooper Medical Center in Mount Pleasant, Hilton Head Hospital in Hilton Head and Coastal Carolina Hospital in Hardeeville.
2024 - Novant Health acquires UCI Medical Affiliates, Inc. (UCI) from BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina. The transaction includes 52 Doctors Care and 20 Progressive Physical Therapy clinics.
