Inpatient child/adolescent treatment

We offer child and adolescent mental health inpatient services for children ages seven to 17 (18 if in high school). Experienced child psychiatrists will identify your child’s primary issues and needs while part of a short-term recovery treatment program. Our mental health care team partners with your family to provide the most suitable treatment strategies for your child.

How inpatient treatment services work

Our child and adolescent inpatient care team provides compassionate supervision in a safe, child-friendly, age-appropriate environment. Our experts will assess your child's specific needs and determine the best course of action. As the parent or guardian, you will be involved in the process and have a say in your child's treatment. Strategies used may include:

  • Insight-oriented group therapy
  • Educational groups
  • Coping skills training
  • Recreational therapy
  • Medication

Partial hospitalization adolescent program

The partial hospitalization program at Novant Health is designed to uniquely support the needs of adolescents ages 13 to 17. Your child will be treated in a safe and stable environment by caring, compassionate mental health specialists.

The program typically lasts four to six weeks, depending on your child's specific needs. We'll consider their mental well-being and any related medical challenges they may face. Our care team is available Mondays through Fridays from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

How the program works

Throughout the program, your child will participate in individual, group and family therapy sessions. Their team of specialists may include a psychiatrist, therapist, educator, recreational therapist and mental health nurse. These experts will assist your adolescent with:

  • Treatment alternatives
  • Medications and dosages
  • Related medical support
  • Prioritizing schoolwork
  • Developing coping skills
  • Therapeutic activities
