Family planning & preconception

If you are planning on becoming pregnant, we want to help give your baby the healthiest start possible. Novant Health’s expert maternity specialists will help you make a personalized preconception plan that sets your family up for success. Your care may include anything from genetic counseling to simple diet and lifestyle changes.

High-risk pregnancy

You may need a maternal-fetal specialist on your care team if you have medical or family history that could make your pregnancy high-risk. They will help monitor you and your baby more closely throughout your pregnancy to reduce the risk of complications.

Committed to making you feel at home at every phase

Your pregnancy journey begins with your ob-gyn care team. The routine visits you have with them during pregnancy will get you all the care, updates, and information you need as you and your family prepare for delivery. Where you deliver your baby depends on which hospitals your ob-gyn care team are attached to.

When you get to the hospital or birthing center to deliver your baby, you'll be met by your family-centered maternity care team made up of friendly, experienced specialists who will answer your questions, help you get comfortable in your room, and get you ready for your delivery.

Our private, home-like maternity suites accommodate you, your baby, your support partner, and your doula (if you have one). Some of our hospitals feature luxury birthing centers or alternative birthing suites and methods (available for low-risk births). Alternative birth suites may include free-standing hydrotherapy tubs and extra space for visiting friends and family.

If complications during delivery do arise, rest assured that our expert teams are equipped to get you whatever advanced care you need for a safe delivery and recovery, whether it be a dedicated obstetric surgical suites, obstetric emergency room, or neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).

After your baby arrives, you'll typically be in the hospital for 24 to 48 hours if you have a vaginal delivery with no complications. For Cesarean (C-) section deliveries, you’ll likely stay in the hospital for 48 to 72 hours after delivery.

Find childcare & a pediatrician before delivery.

While you’re pregnant and daydreaming about life with your new baby, it’s also important to plan some things that may feel less interesting: choosing a pediatrician and arranging childcare.

A pediatrician is your family’s care partner and go-to expert for your child's health and growth throughout their first year and beyond. We recommend you choose a pediatrician at the start of your third trimester, as your care team will ask for their name when you arrive at the hospital to deliver. To help you find the one that best matches your needs and preferences, many pediatrician offices even allow you to schedule tours.

Whether you choose day care, a nanny, family, yourself, or a combination of these for childcare, many options can get filled up or have months-long waitlists. That’s why it’s so important to start arranging for childcare as early as possible, even as soon as you know you’re pregnant.
