Walk-in Orthopedic Injury Care
When a bone, joint or muscle injury happens, you may not need to wait days for an appointment. A walk-in orthopedic clinic can provide expert evaluation and treatment for fractures, sprains, strains, sports injuries and other recent orthopedic injuries.
Our orthopedic and sports medicine specialists can examine your injury, order on-site X-rays when needed and provide bracing, splinting or casting. Whether you need a same-day orthopedic doctor for a sudden injury or additional follow-up care, our team can help you take the next step toward recovery.
No appointment? No problem. Select locations offer walk-in care and same-day orthopedic appointments for new and existing patients.

Why choose an orthopedic walk-in clinic instead of urgent care?
When you have a sudden bone, joint or muscle injury, choosing where to get care can be confusing. While urgent care clinics treat a wide range of illnesses and injuries, a walk-in orthopedic clinic focuses specifically on musculoskeletal injuries, including fractures, sprains, strains and sports injuries.
Choosing a walk-in orthopedic clinic can help you get specialized care from the start and may help you avoid a trip to the emergency room for many common orthopedic injuries. With walk-in availability and same-day orthopedic appointments at select locations, you can get an evaluation and start a treatment plan sooner.

When should you visit an orthopedic walk-in clinic?
If an injury appears to be life-threatening or requires immediate medical attention, go to the nearest emergency room. Many non-life-threatening orthopedic injuries that happen after hours can wait until the next day to be evaluated at an orthopedic walk-in clinic. Orthopedic specialists treat twists, sprains, joint pain, fractures and other bone, joint and muscle injuries every day.
Visit an orthopedic walk-in clinic if you have:
- Pain after a fall or sports injury
- Heard or felt a pop during activity
- Difficulty walking or putting weight on an injured leg, ankle or foot
- Severe swelling or bruising after an injury
- Limited range of motion
- A suspected broken bone or fracture
- A possible dislocation
- A sprain or strain causing significant pain
- Joint instability or a feeling that a joint is giving out
- Persistent pain that isn't improving within 24 to 48 hours
- Pain that's preventing you from participating in work, school or sports
- A recent injury involving your shoulder, elbow, wrist, hand, hip, knee, ankle or foot
If you think you may have a concussion, go to the nearest emergency room or call 911.
Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room if you have:
Some injuries require immediate emergency medical attention.
- Severe or uncontrolled bleeding
- An open fracture where bone is visible through the skin
- A major head injury or loss of consciousness
- Chest pain or difficulty breathing
- A serious neck or spine injury
- A limb that becomes cold, blue or numb, which may indicate loss of circulation
- A serious injury caused by a high-speed or high-impact accident
- Severe, uncontrolled pain following a traumatic injury
What happens during your visit?
Getting care for an orthopedic injury shouldn't be complicated. When you visit a Novant Health walk-in orthopedic and sports medicine clinic, our team will evaluate your injury, determine the next steps and help you begin treatment.
- Check in. Walk in during your location's designated hours and check in with our team. No appointment is needed for walk-in care at participating locations.
- Get evaluated. An orthopedic provider will examine your injury, discuss your symptoms and ask how the injury happened.
- Get X-rays if needed. If your provider suspects a fracture or another injury that requires imaging, on-site X-rays are available at all walk-in clinic locations.
- Receive a diagnosis. Your provider will review your exam and imaging results to determine what's causing your pain and recommend appropriate treatment.
- Start treatment. Depending on your injury, treatment may include a splint, brace or cast, along with recommendations to manage pain, swelling and activity while you recover.
- Get a treatment and follow-up plan. Before you leave, you'll know what to do next. Your clinician will develop a treatment plan and, when needed, connect you with the right orthopedic specialist or physical therapist based on your injury and care needs
Can I visit an orthopedic walk-in clinic without an appointment?
Yes. Novant Health offers walk-in orthopedic care at select locations, so you can be evaluated for many recent bone, joint and muscle injuries without a scheduled appointment. Walk-in hours and patient age requirements vary by location, so call your nearest clinic before visiting to confirm availability.
Do orthopedic walk-in clinics treat children?
Some Novant Health orthopedic walk-in clinics treat children and teens with fractures, sprains, strains, sports injuries and other orthopedic injuries. Age requirements may vary by location, so call the clinic before visiting to confirm pediatric walk-in care is available.
Can you perform X-rays during my visit?
Yes, all of our Novant Health Orthopedic Walk-in Clinics have on-site X-rays available and can help diagnose fractures and other injuries during your visit. If additional imaging or testing is needed, your provider will explain the next steps.
What should I bring to my appointment?
Bring your photo ID, insurance card and a list of your current medications. If you have previous X-rays, imaging results or medical records related to your injury, bring those as well if they're available. Wear comfortable clothing that makes it easy for your provider to examine the injured area.
