Rotation Description: The resident will have the opportunity to participate as a member of a multidisciplinary emergency department (ED) team and to respond to all medical emergencies including, but not limited to: strokes, STEMIs, cardiac arrests, and rapid sequence intubations. The resident will develop skills in bedside medication preparation and consultation. The resident will perform chart reviews to optimize medication therapy, provide healthcare provider education, perform ED culture reviews, and answer drug information questions.

Rotation Description: The resident will develop leadership skills and acquire an understanding of the administrative aspects of pharmacy practice. The rotation will focus on applying management principles while observing department and hospital policy and procedures. Rotation experiences may also include budget management, strategic planning, and process improvement projects.

Caroline Billingsley, PharmD, BCPS
Rotation(s): Transitions of Care
Rotation Description: This rotation allows the resident to further develop and apply patient counseling skills by educating patients as they are discharged from inpatient care. The resident will focus on identifying and educating patients in most need, including those with a diagnosis of heart failure, diabetes, stroke, myocardial infarction, and those on an anticoagulant or with multiple recent visits to the hospital. The resident will learn about several resources to improve medication access and utilize those tools to ensure continuity of medication regimens for outpatient care. The resident will also support several pharmacy services including interdisciplinary rounds, medication reviews, and serve as a liaison to the pharmacy department.

Rotation Description: The rotation provides the resident the opportunity to participate in direct-patient care activities and gain experience practicing as a clinical pharmacist in the inpatient setting, managing patients on the cardiac unit or medical and surgery patients in a variety of disease states. The resident will participate in interdisciplinary rounds to assist with medication reviews, help identify barriers to medication and discharge, and be a resource to the medical team.

Rotation Description: The primary goal of this rotation is to prepare the resident to function as an independent, well-rounded clinical pharmacist upon completion of the program. The resident will perform clinical activities such as order verification, clinical monitoring, answer questions, and provide recommendations. The resident will gain experience in central pharmacy operations, including dispensing of medications, sterile IV preparation and verification, and management of pharmacy personnel and workflow.

Rotation(s): Infectious Diseases, Antimicrobial Stewardship
Rotation Description: The resident will have the opportunity to participate in various antimicrobial stewardship activities at multiple community hospitals within Novant Health. Residents will evaluate antimicrobial regimens and collaborate with providers and other pharmacists to ensure patients receive appropriate and streamlined therapy. Topic discussions may include antimicrobial drug classes, infectious disease states, and microbiology. The rotation will be tailored towards the resident’s knowledge and interests within infectious diseases.

Rotation Description: The resident will have the opportunity to develop skills in providing pharmaceutical care to medical critical care patients and to acquire an understanding of the pharmacist’s role on the MICU interdisciplinary team. The resident will participate in patient care rounds with intensivists, nurses, physical therapists, respiratory therapists, dieticians, and other members of the MICU team.

Rotation Description: The primary goal of this rotation is to expose the resident to the various functions within the pharmacy department. During this on-boarding period, the resident will be introduced to clinical pharmacist duties and activities. This includes general hospital information, department specific details, and an introduction to pharmacy operations. Activities reviewed include medication preparation, distribution, and drug monitoring.

Rotation Description: This rotation offers the resident the opportunity to develop and apply patient management skills by providing comprehensive pharmaceutical services including clinical medication reviews, pharmacotherapy consults, pharmacokinetic analysis, drug information, and intensive monitoring of patients with a variety of psychiatric disorders on each behavioral health unit (adult and geriatric). The resident will be an active participant in project initiatives to advance the behavioral health unit, interdisciplinary treatment team meetings, in-services to other pharmacists/nursing staff and will serve as a unit liaison to the pharmacy department.
