Pharmacy Residency
Thank you for your interest in the pharmacy residency programs at Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center (NHNHRMC). Our pharmacy residency program began in 1998 with one Ambulatory Care resident, and has grown exponentially. After implementing our PGY1 Pharmacy residency in 2007, we have expanded to include a PGY1 Community-Based Pharmacy residency (2012) and PGY2 Critical Care residency (2016), and a PGY1/PGY2 Health System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership (HSPAL) residency (2022). Presently we offer 10 residency positions each year, all of which have undergone, the ASHP accreditation process.
The pharmacy department is an integral part of patient care at our institution. Pharmacy staff have close working relationships with patients, nurses, prescribers, and other healthcare professionals, and participate in developing care plans throughout the continuum of care.
Through our program, you will develop skills to become a clinician, educator, and leader in the pharmacy profession. As the area's referral center, Novant Health NHRMC has a highly diverse patient population which will enable you to encounter a wide variety of disease states and conditions. Additionally, Novant Health NHRMC is a great blend of a community and academic medical center. Our affiliation with state colleges of pharmacy will provide you the opportunity to experience a variety of different teaching environments, from small group discussions to rotation precepting.
It is expected that residents graduate from the Novant Health NHRMC residency program with skills to:
- Provide competent patient care through all aspects of the healthcare system
- Serve as a medication expert on an interdisciplinary team
- Effectively teach health care professionals, students, and the community
- Effectively communicate, both written and verbally
- Apply critical thinking and evaluative skills to solve practice-related problems
- Improve ability to self-evaluate and increase personal confidence levels
- Use evidence-based medicine to answer drug information and practice questions
- Become a leader in the pharmacy profession
Our preceptors are actively engaged in the residency program, and are ready to serve as mentors and role models. Most of our preceptors are board certified, and many are involved in regional, state, and national professional organizations.
While there are many pharmacy residency programs for you to choose from, we hope you will consider our programs. We are proud of our program and its graduates. Look forward to seeing you in Wilmington!
