Scholarly Activity

We believe that every resident can contribute to the future of medicine through scholarship. That’s why all residents complete at least three scholarly activities during their training — two team-based quality improvement (QI) projects and one capstone activity.

Scholarship is woven into our residency through:

  • Evidence-based medicine training (learning how to analyze journal articles)
  • Scholarship workshops (for brainstorming, planning, and peer feedback)
  • Morbidity & mortality reviews
  • Resident-led lectures and teaching sessions

What counts as scholarly activity?

Your projects can focus on:

  • Discovery: creating new knowledge (research studies)
  • Integration: Connecting and analyzing existing knowledge
  • Application: Using knowledge to improve patient care
  • Teaching: Designing educational tools or lessons

Team-based quality improvement projects

  • Longitudinal, collaborative quality improvement projects
  • Teams of second- and third-year residents
  • Dedicated time for project formation and application
  • Each resident will complete two quality improvement projects by the end of training
  • Opportunities for feedback from clinic staff and Community Advisory Council

Capstone project

  • Longitudinal project with clear benchmarks to provide accountability
  • Usually research or quality improvement
  • Identified faculty mentor
  • Presented at Annual Scholarship Day at the end of third year
