Increasing Access To Expert Care For Western North Carolina

Novant Health is dedicated to creating a healthier future and bringing remarkable experiences to life. We are invested in Western North Carolina and continue to look for ways to increase access to expert, personalized care.

We are excited to confirm our plans to apply to build a new 26-bed cancer-focused hospital in Buncombe County.

Our commitment to Western North Carolina extends beyond a new hospital. Over the past year, we opened Novant Health Surgical Partners - Biltmore in partnership with respected local surgeons in Asheville and expanded urgent care services with three Novant Health-GoHealth urgent care centers in Black Mountain and Asheville.

We are also committing $20 million over the next five years to further develop rural primary care, and we have acquired space at 1815 Hendersonville Road in Asheville to open a multidisciplinary medical office building.

From offering new services and care locations to establishing unique partnerships, we are making investments to provide more support and better access so this vibrant community can thrive.

With thousands of patients like Keith Ashe in mind, we're committed to bringing comprehensive cancer care closer to home for Buncombe County residents and beyond.

Novant Health Asheville Medical Center

Our proposed medical center will offer better access to care, higher-quality health services and more choices to Buncombe County. With a proven track record of building and growing community hospitals, we hope to bring compassionate care and lifesaving innovation close to home for residents of Western North Carolina.

Plans for Novant Health Asheville Medical Center include best-in-class cancer care services. The hospital proposal includes 26 acute care beds, an emergency department, and imaging and pharmacy services. The cancer-focused hospital will combine the expertise of trusted local physicians with resources from Novant Health Cancer Institute, which has the ability to treat more than 100 different types of cancer with an aggressive, leading-edge approach focused on the patient’s physical and emotional needs.

Novant Health Asheville Medical Center will be built on a 24-acre site near the Biltmore Park Town Square shopping mall off Interstate 26. The address is 455 Long Shoals Road in Asheville.

Community Support And Partnership

Novant Health is committed to providing on-the-ground community support. Our community engagement and health equity teams facilitate programs and partnerships that are strategically focused on supporting safe and healthy communities. Our programs improve health and support upward mobility in all communities, especially those that need it most.

We do not take a one-size-fits-all approach. Novant Health identifies local health and social needs vital to our communities’ well-being. We partner with local and community organizations to provide philanthropic support to address identified challenges and deliver solutions.

Each year, we offer hundreds of programs that serve patients, neighbors and some of our communities' most vulnerable citizens. In 2023, we invested $1.6 billion in the communities we serve, including nearly $225 million in financial assistance. We believe that everyone deserves remarkable care that allows them to live their best lives.

Safety And Quality

Novant Health continues to set the highest standards for safety and quality in the communities we serve and received the most “As” for patient safety in North Carolina for The Leapfrog Group’s Fall 2023 scoring period.

We are committed to innovation, and we relentlessly seek solutions to some of our greatest challenges while elevating safety, quality and access to care. Some examples of our forward-thinking care philosophy include:

  • Partnering with Microsoft, Viz.ai and many other leading-edge artificial intelligence (AI) companies to help lead the next generation of AI medical care.
  • Integrating SwipeSense electronic hand hygiene monitoring across the system to enable real-time tracking of safety behaviors.
  • Modeling and predicting healthcare-associated infections before they happen.
