Surprise flowers delight an admirable team member

Submitted by Tamika Tatro, environmental services operations manager, Novant Health Brunswick Medical Center

Recently, I heard an amazing story about Angie Small, a second shift environmental services tech on my team at NHBMC. On that day, I received a call around 3:15 p.m., and learned that Angie had flowers delivered to her at the front desk. After our team huddle, I told Angie that she had something waiting for her at the front desk. I didn’t want to spoil the surprise, so I didn’t tell her the delivery was flowers.

A few minutes later, she came down the hall with a huge smile on her face! She stopped and told me that the flowers were from a previous patient and her family, and then she shared a special story.

Two weeks prior, Angie was cleaning the main lobby area and noticed a little girl sitting with her family. Angie said she wanted to do something nice for the child so she went into the children’s compassionate closet and gave her a blanket and a teddy bear. The child and her parents were beyond excited. The parents were extremely thankful that Angie effortlessly went out of her way to make their child’s day a little brighter. Angie said to me, “I just wanted to make her smile. It felt good to see her so excited to get the blanket and teddy bear.”

The message on the card that came with the flowers read: “Thank you for taking such special care of our little girl two weeks ago. You went the extra mile with the teddy bear and the blanket. We are so grateful.”

This is what it is all about! I am so very proud of Angie and how she took patient care to the next level. She made an impact that will never be forgotten.

I also want to give a special “thank you” to our awesome volunteers who take the time to make the blankets and teddy bears for our compassionate closet.
