Complex Regional Pain Syndrome
What is complex regional pain syndrome?
Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a condition that causes ongoing, intense pain — often much greater than what would normally be expected after an injury or surgery. It can also lead to swelling, stiffness and changes in how the affected area looks or feels. Doctors do not fully understand why CRPS happens, but it is thought to be related to how the nerves and brain process pain signals.
There are two types of CRPS:
- Type I happens without a known nerve injury.
- Type II happens when there is a confirmed nerve injury.
