Collection containers are available in the chemistry department of the laboratory. When picking up containers, personnel must know what test has been ordered so that the proper preservative, if any, can be added.

Procedure for collection of 24-hour urine specimen

1. Have the patient empty his bladder. Discard this specimen and note the time.
2. Collect all urine for the next 24 hours.
3. At the end of the 24-hour period, have the patient empty his bladder again and add this specimen to the collection.

Procedure for collection of 2-hour urine specimen

1. Have the patient empty his bladder. Discard this specimen and note the time.
2. After two hours, have the patient void again and save the specimen. If the patient must void before the 2-hour interval is complete, save this specimen as part of the collection.

Notes
  • Never let a patient void directly into a collection container.
  • Collect all urine. If there is an accident, start the collection again.
  • Store the specimen on ice or refrigerate.
