Our intensive outpatient program is designed for adults diagnosed with psychiatric conditions. Our licensed psychotherapists use group therapy strategies in a supportive setting to help individuals learn to manage their symptoms. Group participants support each other empathetically while learning various coping skills that help them manage their symptoms daily, instead of letting them build into a crisis situation.

Our intensive outpatient group meets Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Presbyterian Medical Center, 200 Hawthorne Lane, in Charlotte.

What to expect

Each daily group session has two components: a psychotherapy group and a psycho-education group.

Our first group session helps you to recognize the importance of active participation, openness of communication, identification of feelings, and productive ways to express your feelings. Through discussion, you'll become more aware of your own patterns of thinking, feeling and reacting; you become empowered to take charge of your behavior and your life.

Our second group session focuses on education using an array of topics such as self-care, healing from trauma events, anxiety management, enhancing self-esteem, assertive communication, dealing with grief, loss or shame, and setting healthy boundaries.

We expect daily three-hour blocks of attendance, five days per week. The average length of stay is typically 12 to 15 sessions.

Get started

Admission interviews are available Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. by appointment. You must have a community-based psychiatrist and a primary psychiatric diagnosis. We work with you and your psychiatrists to address any unique needs.

Our intensive outpatient program is recognized by most major insurance companies. If you are considered a self-paying participant, our Novant Health billing office staff can help you set up a payment plan to meet your needs.
