Growing up in Western Africa, I saw how important healthcare, and having access to healthcare, was. My mother told me stories about how lone midwives in villages were responsible for ensuring safe births. She told me the story of one midwife who singlehandedly successfully completed a breech delivery. After hearing these stories, I felt that medicine was my divine calling and I knew it was the only career for me.
