As a child, I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. This meant frequent checkups with a doctor who, fortunately, genuinely cared about me and made sure my parents knew how to take care of me. That doctor cared for me until I was 21 and moved on to an adult endocrinologist, who was also excellent. Seeing those providers' dedication sparked my interest in medicine; I became a nurse, then a diabetes education and finally a nurse practitioner.
