Our vision is the fulfillment of the promises made when we welcomed New Hanover Regional Medical Center into the Novant Health system in 2021.

Investment to Advance Care in Wilmington

Novant Health’s board of trustees has approved planned expansions for New Hanover Regional Medical Center, building infrastructure to support healthcare needs for decades including:

Heart and vascular tower at 17th Street
80,000-square-foot heart and vascular medical office building
60-bed rehabilitation hospital on Wrightsville Avenue

Our strategic plan, Vision 2030, outlines an ambitious path forward and focuses our resources and efforts around five key areas:

Empowering Our Care Teams

We strive to be recognized as a top career destination for physicians and team members and rank among top healthcare organizations for team members and medical staff engagement and high standards for nursing.

As part of our commitment to support nurse retention, we provide a Nurse Residency Program, allowing new nurses to gain exposure in different areas of nursing, plus mentorship programs and coaching sessions, to ensure they have support needed as they start their career with us. We have also invested in expanded tuition programs to support team member advancement as they grow their skills.

Advancing Safety and Quality

We pursue and provide unparalleled safety and quality in our care, learning from industry best practices and implementing our HeRO playbook -- our comprehensive guide for our efforts to elevate safety, quality, and patient experience across our organization. 

For instance, our proactive safety efforts resulted in a 50% reduction in patient fall injuries. 

Driving Positive Patient Experience

We provide outstanding patient experiences throughout our facilities. 

One way we achieve this is to support continued improvements in patient experience. We launched a task force that includes team members who work at the bedside, and we’re involving patients and families in our collaborative work through our patient/family advisory councils (PFACs), to ensure their input is part of the process.

Ensuring Operational Excellence

We strive for operational excellence, ensuring everything from our cleanliness to our food delivery is optimized to support our care teams and patients.  

For example, for patients seen in the emergency department who need to be admitted to the hospital to continue care, a program focused on supporting patient experience has led to a 26% reduction in wait time for inpatient bed placement.

Advancing Access to Care

Novant Health is growing access to care across the region, opening more locations and recruiting new clinicians to meet the healthcare needs of our community. 

In support of this goal, we’re constructing the future Scotts Hill Medical Center, which will ensure an expansion of much-needed inpatient beds in New Hanover County, easing some of the capacity constraints we've experienced.
