A freestanding emergency department provides 24/7 emergency care for serious illnesses and injuries. While it is not physically attached to a hospital, it offers many of the same services as a hospital-based emergency room including imaging and laboratory services, is fully equipped to stabilize patients and can coordinate transfer to a hospital when additional care is needed.
