At Novant Health, we support the nationwide effort to ensure that patients coming into the hospital with specific conditions receive recommended care. These recommendations are based on years of research on interventions that have been proven to improve outcomes for these conditions.
What are we doing to improve?
Urinary catheter associated infections are one of the most common types of infections in both the ICU setting and in the rest of the hospital. In our intensive care unit improvement team meetings, we share best practices from each hospital. We avoid placing a urinary catheter if patients can void his or her bladder without difficulty. When a catheter is needed, we use the CDC-recommended guidelines on how to place the catheter in the safest manner possible using a sterile procedure and we remove the catheter as soon as the patient no longer needs it.
