We’re here to help reduce your risk of pregnancy complications
Even if you have risk factors that may complicate your pregnancy, our highly skilled and experienced team is here to provide the very best care and put you at ease.
High-risk pregnancies can develop due to a number of factors:
- Personal risk factors – Your age (age 35 and older), problems in past pregnancies, previous birth defects, or multiple births (twins, triplets or more).
- Medical risk factors – Any previous medical conditions such as high blood pressure; heart, kidney, lung or liver disease; viral or bacterial infections; diabetes; anemia or seizure disorders; or a family history of difficult pregnancies.
- Lifestyle risk factors – Preventable risk factors that you can eliminate by changing your lifestyle: smoking, drinking alcohol, poor nutrition, weight (both overweight and underweight) and lack of prenatal care. Test your knowledge about pregnancy and drugs - see below.
If you have any of these risk factors, consult with your obstetrician. He or she can help you determine if you need to see a maternal-fetal medicine specialist to ensure that both you and your baby are safe and healthy.
In the course of pregnancy, you may also develop complications, such as preeclampsia and eclampsia, gestational diabetes, or preterm labor. We provide specialized care for these circumstances.
If you have a high-risk pregnancy, our specialists will work with your ob-gyn to monitor you and your baby’s progress throughout your pregnancy. We may also recommend prenatal tests to help better evaluate the health of your baby prior to birth.
We also provide genetic counseling to couples who have concerns about a possible genetic condition or birth defect.
