Ear, nose and throat surgery
There are many conditions that can impact your ear, nose and throat; at Novant Health, our surgeons are here to work with you to resolve the problem. In most cases, we use minimally invasive procedures and perform these surgeries on an outpatient basis.
Sleep apnea, in which your breathing stops temporarily while you’re asleep due to blockage of your airway, is one of the conditions treated by our ear, nose and throat (ENT) surgeons, whose specialty is called otolaryngology (oh-toe-lair-in-GAHL-oh-gee). Often associated with snoring, sleep apnea can increase your risk of stroke, high blood pressure or heart failure. It can also leave you drowsy during the day and less alert for important activities.
One of the ways we can treat sleep apnea is with radio waves to ablate (destroy) tissue at the base of the tongue. The ablation technique shrinks the area over time and helps you breathe better as you sleep. The technique can also work with tissue in the nasal passages to improve breathing. To achieve the best result for you, your surgeon may combine an ablation procedure with a tonsillectomy or palate surgery.
Novant Health is a regional leader in state-of-the-art sinus procedures. We can help you get relief from sinus-related symptoms such as:
- Facial pain, pressure, congestion or fullness
- Nasal obstruction or blockage
- Discharge of discolored mucus from the nose
- Discolored post-nasal drainage
- Loss of smell
- Headache
- Bad breath
- Fatigue
If you suffer from chronic sinusitis, our ENT surgeons can help with specialized sinus endoscopy, using a revolutionary image-guided surgical system for extreme precision in delicate areas. You may be a candidate for balloon sinuplasty, which uses a small, flexible balloon catheter to gently restructure your blocked nasal passage. Because the procedure preserves the sinus lining in restoring sinus drainage and function, many patients can return to normal activities within 24 hours.
Many of our ENTs also specialize in care for children.
