Treating concussions and helping athletes lower their risk for more serious injury
Every concussion is a serious injury. At Novant Health, our primary care sports medicine physicians have advanced training in treating concussions and helping athletes lower their risk for more serious brain injury and complications.
We use a neurocognitive test called ImPACT™ as well as vestibular balance testing to help measure the effects of a concussion and determine when it is safe for an athlete to return to play. All of our primary care sports medicine physicians have earned the distinction of being named Credentialed ImPACT™ Consultants.
Novant Health offers ImPACT™ Baseline Concussion Testing to anyone who would like to get a baseline measurement prior to sustaining an injury. Baseline measurements help experts evaluate patients in the event of a possible concussion, including determining athletes’ readiness to return to play.
ImPACT™ Baseline Concussion Testing is a simple test that can be completed online. Once you complete the test, your results will be stored in our database.
If you have a head injury
If you have a head injury or think you may have a concussion at any time after taking the test, make an appointment with one of our concussion experts by calling Novant Health Sports Medicine at 704-316-SPRT (7778). This hotline is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week by nurses who can answer your questions and schedule your appointment.
The physician will repeat the ImPACT™ test in the clinic and compare the results with your baseline test results. This comparison will help us make a diagnosis and manage your recovery, including your return to play if you are an athlete.
Taking the test
We are able to interpret test results for patients ages 10 and up. Children younger than 10 should not take the test. Children ages 10 to 17 may need adult assistance to launch the test, but there should be no direct supervision or interaction once the test begins. Allow your child to take the test independently in order to achieve accurate test results.
The cost of the online baseline concussion test is $15.
